How We Install Tile

Prepare the substrateThe wall or floor is checked for flatness and made ready. Tile follows whatever is underneath it, so lippage almost always starts with the substrate.
Waterproof wet areasShowers and tub surrounds get their waterproofing system installed and detailed at corners and penetrations before a single tile is set.
Dry layoutTile is laid out before it's fixed, so cuts land in sensible places and you're not left with a sliver at the most visible corner in the room.
Set, grout, and sealTile set with full coverage and consistent joints, then grouted, cleaned, and siliconed at changes of plane.

What Actually Keeps a Tiled Shower Dry

The most common misconception in tiling is that the tile and grout keep water out. They do not. Grout is porous and tile assemblies are designed to let some moisture through. What keeps the wall dry is the waterproofing behind the tile.

The substrate: Regular drywall does not belong in a shower. Cement board or a foam backer board is the correct base, fastened to properly spaced framing.
The waterproofing layer: A membrane or liquid-applied system over the backer, detailed carefully at corners, seams and every screw penetration. This layer is what your shower depends on, and it becomes invisible the moment tile goes on.
Slope and drainage: Shower floors need consistent fall to the drain. Ponding water means the pre-slope was never built correctly, and it cannot be corrected after tiling.
Movement joints: Changes of plane, wall-to-floor and inside corners take flexible sealant rather than grout. Grouting these is the usual reason a shower develops cracked lines within a year or two.
Layout before setting: Dry-laying the tile decides where cuts land. Done properly you avoid a sliver of tile at the most visible corner, and grout lines run consistently across a whole wall or floor.

Because we handle the drywall and backer board as well as the tile, the waterproofing and the substrate are not being handed between two trades who each assume the other dealt with it.
