How We Hang Drywall
- Plan the sheet layoutSheets are laid out to keep the number of joints down and to move butt joints off the main sight lines in the room where the layout allows.
- Ceilings firstCeiling board goes up before wall board, so the wall sheets tuck under and support the ceiling edge instead of leaving it to the fasteners alone.
- Hang and fastenBoard is set tight to the framing and screwed off to the correct pattern, with joints staggered so no seam runs the full height or length.
- Check before tapingEvery sheet is checked for gaps, proud screws, and loose board. Fixing it now costs minutes; fixing it after the tape coat costs a day.
Board Types
Choosing the Right Drywall for the Room
Drywall is not one product. Using the wrong board in the wrong room is a common reason a wall fails early, and it is invisible once everything is painted.
- Regular board
- Standard gypsum board for typical walls and ceilings in living space. Usually 1/2 inch on walls, and 5/8 inch on ceilings to resist sagging over time.
- Moisture-resistant
- Treated core and facing for bathrooms, laundry rooms and basements. It resists humidity; it is not a tile backer and does not belong inside a shower.
- Cement or foam tile backer
- What actually goes behind tile in a wet area. Regular or even moisture-resistant board behind a shower will eventually fail.
- Type X fire-rated
- Required by code in specific assemblies: most commonly garage ceilings and walls shared with living space, furnace rooms, and between units. A code requirement, not an upgrade.
- Abuse and impact-resistant
- Denser core and tougher facing for hallways, stairwells, garages and commercial corridors that take knocks.
- Acoustic board
- Damped multi-layer board for bedrooms, home offices, media rooms and party walls, where sound transfer is the problem being solved.
Board thickness, orientation and fastener spacing all follow from the framing behind it. We check what is there before ordering, because the cheapest board is the one that does not have to come back off.

Drywall Installation FAQs
Half-inch board is standard on walls in living space. Ceilings usually take 5/8 inch, because half-inch board can sag between joists over time, particularly at wider spacing. Garage ceilings and walls shared with living space typically require 5/8 Type X fire-rated board by code.
For the general walls and ceiling of a bathroom, yes, moisture-resistant board is the right choice. Inside the shower or tub surround it is not enough on its own: that area needs a cement or foam tile backer with a proper waterproofing system behind the tile.
Horizontally in most residential work. It puts the tapered factory edges together in a long seam that is easier to finish invisibly, and it crosses more studs, which stiffens the wall. Vertical hanging is used where wall height or a fire-rated assembly calls for it.
Sometimes, and it is usually not the best answer. It adds thickness at every door jamb, window return, outlet and trim detail, all of which then need adjusting. Where the existing board is damaged or damp, laminating over it just buries the problem.
