Paint Sheen
Which Paint Sheen Belongs in Which Room
Sheen is the single decision that most affects how a finished room looks, and the one homeowners are least often walked through. Higher sheen wipes clean more easily but shows every imperfection in the wall underneath.
- Flat and matte
- Hides surface imperfection better than anything else, which makes it the usual choice for ceilings and older walls. Harder to scrub, so a poor fit for a busy hallway.
- Eggshell
- The common default for living rooms and bedrooms. Slight softness to the light, wipes down reasonably, still forgiving on the wall surface.
- Satin
- More durable and more washable. Good for hallways, kids rooms and family bathrooms. It starts to reveal wall flaws, so the taping underneath has to be right.
- Semi-gloss and gloss
- Trim, doors, cabinets and high-moisture rooms. Very washable and very unforgiving: it shows every ridge and fastener, which is why these walls want a Level 5 finish underneath.
The rule that follows: the higher the sheen you want, the better the drywall finishing beneath it has to be. Because we do both the taping and the paint, we can tell you up front whether the wall is ready for the sheen you have picked.
